In a survey of over 1,000 gamers, we discovered that the allure of fresh gaming experiences is undeniable. It’s no wonder that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom tops the list of 2023’s most beloved new games, closely followed by Diablo IV and the captivating Hogwarts Legacy.
However, the pursuit of these new adventures comes at a price, with gamers collectively shelling out an average of $146 on video games in 2023. A growing 79% believe that the cost of gaming is spiraling out of control, pushing some to resort to less savory means, as nearly 1 in 3 (29%) have admitted to illegal game downloads.
Methodology
Our quest to unveil America’s gaming preferences involved an exhaustive analysis of Google search data encompassing 1,752 video game-related terms, spanning the period from April 2020 to April 2023. To add depth to our findings, we surveyed 1,006 self-identified gamers who dabble in handheld console games, esports, and virtual reality games. The respondents spanned ages from 18 to 60, with an average age of 35, and were comprised of 50% men, 48% women, and 2% non-binary individuals.
